Nonexistent

First it was a dream…
Then it was a nightmare…
Then it was nothing…

This is a story of love, hatred and indifference. A story of which the origin was nothing and the outcome was nothing.

He was a survivor – the last man standing in a war that took place inside a place he considered a safe haven. He fought ’till the end and made a lasting exodus.

He went out because he found a new family. One that he thought would shelter him from all the pain, one that he thought would give him the kind of love that he never felt for a long time, or he never felt at all, one that he thought would savage him from the troubles of life and complexities of living.

He was then a lonely soul, trying to find a place he would call home…

It was a joyful place, he would have thought at first. He felt like he belonged in a place he would truly call home. It was a perfect milieu to be exact. That was at the beginning.

But as the saying goes, “Nothing lasts forever.” And yes… He proved that the cliche was nothing but true. The days went by so quickly while the joy went down like a bullet that it pierced his heart. There were days of tensed situations, while there were days of pure apathy. He would oftentimes guess which of the two was happening. He was confused and lonely. There were nights when tears would naturally flow like water coming from the river down to the waterfalls – It would never come to a halt as the night was as sullen as the day.

Then it came to a point where he wouldn’t exist anymore. He would come as invisibly as he could be and would stay that way every single day.

He was used to it. He would be used to it.

He was nonexistent. He is nonexistent.

He needs someone to make him feel that he can be felt. That he deserves to be loved, to be praised, to be embraced as who is.

He needs you now.

Monday

Monday…

It should just be an ordinary day for me. On a day like this, I would usually wake up at 9, open my laptop, surf the internet, eat my breakfast, watch my favorite T.V. shows, finish some drawings, lie down for a while, take a bath and finally go to work to feel the so-called Monday blues but still enjoy teaching my students.

Today is Monday. I still did the things that I mentioned. However, at the end of this day, I would realize that it would be the last Monday like this that I would experience for a long while.

I am leaving… and I will be gone for a year. I am leaving the most special things that I had and have created. I am leaving some people who shared to me a lot of memorable experiences that made me who I am today. And I am leaving some places that have witnessed every little change in me like the new clothes I would wear, or my new haircut or the smiles or frowns I bring every single day.

Yes, I would be back in a year. But what I am uncertain of is if everything is still the same. Maybe in my return, everyone will still wear the same happy faces. But maybe those smiles, those unique smiles will be of different reasons then – reasons that I may not know anymore.

Now I am thinking. Perhaps, changes are meant to happen once in a while. But changes that happen in the most unexpected moments or ways are the ones that hurt the most. That maybe, when we are surprised by those changes, that’s the time when we seek for good reasons but we couldn’t find them at least for that time.

But now I am ready. I have no choice but to be. Saying goodbye is one of the hardest things to do in life, but looking forward to meeting again may be an answer to the sadness that goodbyes leave us.

So this is goodbye…

It’s a Monday. It’s my last Monday in the city. At least for this year. I will be back.

The Forgotten

This is a story of love and loss – a tragedy that has long been forgotten by time.

This is a tale of a couple, a once happy family who faced the crisis of separation.

The man unknowingly left and the women was despairingly abandoned…

They had a child who remained in the woman’s custody, a poor little one who never received anymore affection after the lamentable separation. He ate almost nothing and was starved to death worse than a prisoner in a penitentiary. He died like nothing…

The woman, realizing how awful a parent she was, lost her mind, became a drinker, and eventually took a bottle of poison while wearing her wedding dress. She died in agony…

It took several months, before their bodies were found, and after which, the scene was just left hanging.

In a few occasions, many people would notice a woman in a wedding gown looking for her husband, while a pale-looking toddler follows her.

She has been seen walking on hallways, peeping through windows, and knocking on doors.

She might be standing beside you or at your back now, her cold skin touching yours.

Can you feel her now?

A Letter of Bliss

This is for the person who changed my life.

And changes my life as days go by.

For the person who makes me smile,

And sustains that smile for the whole day.

I’m writing for the person who makes me sing,

And listens even if I’m already shouting.

To the person who speaks like music,

Even if nothing is ever said.

For the person who never runs out of words to say,

And makes me say words that I have never said.

For the person who keeps me awake,

Even if sleeping is the first thing on my mind.

To the person who sees me as I am,

and never dares to judge who I was.

To the person who loves me the way I deserved to be loved,

And gets contented by just a simple hug.

To the person who laughs while a smile,

who mourns while I cry.

To the one who understands,

Even if my emotions don’t coincide with the time.

This is for the person who misses me,

Even if a single hour just passed by.

For the person who knows no regrets,

Even if we share the deepest and darkest secrets.

To the person who gives me life,

And makes me die at the same time.

To the person who honestly stares,

And gives me enough reason to glare.

This is for you,

To a special star in me,

To an occupant of my lonely soul,

This is for you, Anonymous.

Outsider

I stood by the post,

Not far but I’m lost,

I try just to see,

But blind though I’m free.

And I was stuck…

Like a tree that just died.

Like a house left in vain.

I was stuck…

I walked though the floor,

and knocked on your door.

But there was nothing…

There was nothing…

It’s been a long walk,

And not a single talk.

I’ll come back to your door…

Tomorrow might go better,

Though to you, I’m an outsider.

La Première Amour (First Love)

Remember the first time that our eyes met? That was the moment when I died while I was alive and I never realized that it was possible. That was the exact moment that I was certain – - I fell in love for the first time. A moment of entangled heavenly feelings, of magic that pierced through my heart, my mind, my soul. That was the time when I met you. It was magic.

I don’t how or why that same feeling persisted. Maybe it was true love. I was 15; I was too young to realize if love was true. But one thing was sure; With the way I felt for you, I knew it was.

They say that love takes time, but they never said exactly how long. I wasn’t sure as well. But yes, my love for you took time – - one second; a moment of time.

Remember the first time I told you that I loved you? That was, by far, the most nervous I’ve ever been just because I was afraid to fail in the name of love, just because you were my first love. But the moment I said those words, I never really cared for my expectations. I just let my heart speak those words. And after a moment, I felt it cry. It cried with joy. You know why? Because you said you loved me too.

Remember the time when we first held our hands? My palm was sweaty right then, but it didn’t matter to us. Because we  felt like our hearts were intertwined too. And at that point, I came to a realization that life was more than a blessing though I never knew what was more than a blessing.

How could love be so sure right then? That it changed my life, your life, our life. As if forever was near that I wanted more time to spend with you. I could never imagine life without you that I was willing not to close my eyes at night just to make sure that you would never let go of the bond that we shared, the love that we had. And you were everything that mattered to me.

We were in love, I guess. No, we were in love; I was sure.

Maybe you don’t remember all of these. Maybe these don’t matter to you know, or I don’t matter to you either.

But do you remember the time that you walked away? Maybe you do. Because that was the time that you left my heart alone – for no reason.

And maybe you don’t know, I cried all night like a child.

I tried to look for the reason, but you gave me none.

And my heart was torn into pieces.

That was my first love. My first heartbreak. Thank you for teaching my heart.

A Lasting Emprise at Legazpi City (A Detailed Narrative)

Mayon Volcano, with its perfect triangular shape

The Transition

Well this is basically a continuation of my Bicol trip, which started with my Caramoan escapade.

The highlight of this new adventure was of course Mayon Volcano which I’ve been wanting to see ever since I was in grade school.

So this trip started with our departure from Caramoan (Guijalo Port) going back to Sabang Port on August 15. The boat ride was around 2 hours. We left Guijalo Port at 11:00 am and reached Sabang port at 1:00 pm.

At the port, passenger vans going to different locations were already waiting for prospective passengers like us. We found one which would bring us to Naga City. We were heading to Naga because that was the only place we knew that would bring us to Legazpi City. So that trip would be roughly from point A to B in the map below:

Inside the van going to Naga (Archie, Romeo and Jeff)

Our trip from the port to Naga City was another two hours, so that was from 1:00 pm to around 3:00 pm.

Warning: Don’t be tired of our vehicle shifts because there were more.

At Naga City, we were instructed to ride another passenger van (That’s what I’m talking about) going to Legazpi City. We did not actually know the exact location of Ligñon Hill Nature Park but we asked the driver to drop us somewhere near the place and well, he agreed.

While on the way I tweeted:

The trip was another one and a half hour ride and it was not the most spacious rides we had. That was like from point A to B on the map below:

The van labeled Legazpi

The four of us at the back of the van. What' s up Romeo?

And braise yourself for an exciting part.

Well, we finally had our first glimpse of the famous Mayon Volcano while inside the vehicle. That was. by far, one of the most amazing first times I’ve had in my life (honest-to-goodness).

A shot of Mayon Volcano from the van

To my delight, I made another tweet saying:

First sight of Mayon (Read: I just saw Mayon Volcano in person. Amazing.)

When we finally got to our destination, we walked a few blocks and reached Ligñon Hill Nature Park. Before going to this trip, I already made my little research about the park, so I basically knew what to expect – a short hike and zip line. Well the four of us already talked about doing the zip line in the name of fellowship although there was no coercion involved. I swear! (So honest to say, Jerome did not do it).

Ligñon Hill Nature Park (Brown, Jeff, Romeo)

Hiking?

Before reaching the top of the hill, we had to walk for around 20 minutes. It wasn’t that tiring because of a lot of trees along the way plus the fresh air that I knew I wouldn’t smell in Manila.

Going up the hill

And we were finally on tip, all we had on mind was the zip line. Let me tell you something about it. If you decide to do it and all fear is gone, you may choose to have the sitting or the superman. If you choose the sitting one, you’ll obviously be sitting (see my photo below) but if you choose the superman, you’ll be literally doing the superman position when he flies (see Jeff’s photo below).

Excited to do the zip line

This is me!

Romeo while on the zip line

Jeff on the zip line (the Superman pose)

To be completely honest, it was my first time to do it. I had extreme fear of heights before but at that time, I placed appreciation over fear and that what saved my heart from falling down while on that 1-minute ride.

Unexpectedly as well, we saw a good view of the Mayon volcano and what was more to wait for, we took a shot of it.

Mayon Volcano at night

Exhausted because of everything we’ve had for the day, we decided to go to the hotel (Villa Angelina Hotel) via their free shuttle.

Inside the van, going to the hotel

At the entrance to the hotel

Because there were only the four of us, we only rented their Celebrity Deluxe Room and just right after I took a bath, the AC malfunctioned and they couldn’t do anything but transfer us to the Presidential Room.

Enjoying big beds inside the Presidential Room

It was around 7:30 pm – the night was still young. We were thinking of something good to do that night when one of us suggested the Embarcadero Mall. We’ve been hearing about it since we landed to Legazpi but we didn’t actually know what it was or where it was.

One good thing about being a tourist, you can ask all the questions you want without bugging the people. So through our inquisitiveness and brave instincts, we finally reached Embarcadero de Legazpi.

It was a mall. Yes, it was. The way going to the mall was filled with posts encircled by lights (much like in Roxas Boulevard). The mall was beside a sea (much like in SM Mall of Asia).

And the night wouldn’t be complete without a scrumptious supper. We chose a restaurant with a really nice dining table and one that was beside the sea.

At last, Food was served!

Excited to eat!

Can we eat now?

After a nice dinner and happy talks, we decided to go back to the hotel and have a couple of drinks. Then go to sleep because tomorrow would be another exciting day.

The Departure

It was almost 6 am, and it was August 16th.

But just imagine waking up to see Mayon Volcano saying hello when you open the door to the terrace – Simply Amazing.

Our flight back to Manila was at 1:00 pm and we had to be in the airport earlier than the set time. But we had one last stop, the Cagsawa Ruins.

Cagsawa, as far as I knew, was the church near Mayon Volcano, which was devastated when the volcano erupted in 1814. Because of this, it became historical.

And then we had to go. Time was running fast and we had to leave  Legazpi City in a while. We rushed back to the hotel, fixed ourselves for the last time, and went straight to the airport.

At the airport entrance

Weren't we on Zest Air?

And who would have thought that the plane would come on time?

To be honest, I was really worried about this because I had to go to work at 5:30 pm that day. So I was praying for no delays. And there wasn’t. God was really good because he gave a completely sunny weather.

Jerome was a paparazzi.

Jerome got the luck seat (separated from us)

The plane left at exactly 1:15 pm and after an hour or so, we were back in Manila. It was a rainy afternoon – surprising.

I'm not sure if this is Manila but I'm sure it's in the Philippines.

And the adventure ended with a simple  landing in Manila.

Until, I can’t really imagine how four days just went by so fast and how so many things happened in a swift movement of time.

It wasn’t a simple trip to Bicol. It was a trip that God created for me to discover that life doesn’t end in the metro and that nothing compares to the beauty of natural creations.

Indeed, it wasn’t a simple trip. It was a trip of a lifetime, a journey to recognize golden experiences, to meet new people, and eventually make new friends, to laugh in the rain, to soar for the Sun, to enjoy the sands, to smell the breeze, to feel the waves of the sea, to conquer fears, to rejoice, to smile, to LIVE.

Caramoan: A Zion on its Own (A Detailed Story)

Jeff, Romeo, Jerome and Brown

The Plan

This trip actually started with just a simple tweet. It was somewhere in June, I guess, when Jeff, a good friend of mine, tweeted me about riding the Philippine National Railways (PNR) train going to Naga City, Bicol. The thought definitely enthralled me, well, mainly because I was thinking of a train ride like the one going to Hogwarts. Enchanting, isn’t it?

The planning didn’t stop there. That was actually just a minute idea. The real plan commenced when Jeff and I went to SM Mall of Asia and decided to inquire about seat sales on Bicol trips on some travel agencies. We went to four, I guess, and landed into one – Zest Air. We only looked for a trip back home since the original plan was to ride the train going to Naga City. However, there was a sudden change of plan since the plane from Naga to Manila was a lot more costly than a plane from Legazpi to Manila. So we decided to get the latter as according to the agents, Legazpi was just two hours from Naga. I had no idea though, but I said “Okay”. And yes, we already bought tickets 6 tickets, which included some of Jeff’s friends. And at that point, we made a promise, “No turning back.”

The other two were individually bought so only four names were listed here.

The days moved by so quickly and we did a lot of research activities since Bicol was definitely new to us. We divided the organizing part; Jeff did research for Naga City and I did the one for Legazpi City. And through God’s grace, we made it. Jeff arrived at a plan to Caramoan, Camarines Sur and I came up with a plan to a nature park in Legazpi. It still wasn’t complete when another big change came up. We couldn’t ride the train anymore because of work schedule so we decided to just go on and ride a bus. Below was the final itinerary Jeff and I agree upon:

All was set and we were just waiting for the calendar to tell us that August 13th has arrived. A few days before the trip, another unfortunate event actually happened – two people backed out. The main problem there was the costs that we needed to incur because of it. However, through God’s grace again, everything was settled just right. So at that point, we were more than excited to go.

The Adventure

Well, we rode a bus named Peñafrancia, which would bring us to Sabang port, where we would ride going to Caramoan.

It was a long ride – almost 12 hours since the bus left Cubao, Quezon City at around 9:00 pm on August 13th and we arrived at Camarines Sur at around 8:30 am on August 14th. Adding up to the lengthy ride was a deplorable flat tire in the middle of Quezon province. Just imagine how far we traveled (i.e. from Cubao, Quezon City to Camarines Sur, Bicol).

Cubao to Camarines Sur (courtesy of Google maps)

Upon reaching Camarines Sur, we were once again faced by yet another problem. This time, the national road was closed because of a triathlon. We were almost at Sabang port, just 14 km away but we could do anything but blame the bus. It was just a matter of 30 minutes: The road was closed at 8:00 am and we arrived at 8:30 am. “If it wasn’t just for the flat tire.”, I thought.

We couldn’t do anything but just wait while worrying if we could catch up the last boat ride going to Caramoan. I still remember a tweet I made at the time:

A tweet I made in CamSur

The road opened at around 12:00 pm and we safely reached Sabang port at 1:50 pm. God was good because the last boat ride was 2:00 pm.

The Bridge to the Boat

The Boat to Caramoan

An Island we saw while riding the boat

The boat ride took  almost 2 hours. We left Sabang port at 2:00 pm and reached Guijalo port (the one to Caramoan) at 3:55 pm.

Upon reaching the port, a young man came to us and introduced himself as our tour guide. At that point, all my worries were gone. He said that a tricycle going to the hotel was waiting for us nearby. He even mentioned that he waited for us for seven hours and thought that we wouldn’t make it. (But thank God we did.)

Going to the hotel was another 30-minute ride, but it didn’t matter to me that much. The fact that we were there was enough for me to feel satisfied.

While on the tricycle ride, I noticed how people in Caramoan had a life of their own. It was a peninsula, almost like an island but there were means of transportation and livelihood much like how it was in the city. It was amazing.

We reached the hotel just fine. It was called the “Caramoan Garden” and I learned that it was just a new annex of the hotel.

They knew we were tired. So to ease our weariness, they served nothing but sumptuous dinner.

Apparently, we couldn’t follow the itinerary anymore (Island hopping should have been done in the morning). So we just decided to do go to a beach nearby just to feel the ambiance.

Rex Tourist Inn was definitely a place to go to in Caramoan. It was spacious and at the same time, it was a very conducive place for relaxation. Before we slept that night, we enjoyed playing billiards, sang through the karaoke and had a couple of drinks.

The Real Paradise

Tic toc… The clock told us to get off our feet and face the rising sun. It was just around 5 am, but we had to start the day that early to be able to do all the has been planned.

We began the day with appetizing foods plus cups of coffee to soothe our moods.

Jerome enjoying a cup of coffee.

Who says I can't do a coffee commercial?

The real day began when we finally left the hotel through a river just near the dining table and paved our way to the wonderful islands of Caramoan.

Excited to go Island hopping

Exiting the hotel and entering the Island hopping venue

From the river to the sea

And yes, we finally exited the river and reached the sea. But before I continue, I would have to say that I have never heard of Island hopping before. I mean I’m sure I know about bar hopping, but the former was entirely new to my ears. Well, you better judge which is better between the two.

To start the activity, we went to the 1st island. As far as I remember, its name was Pajos (I wasn’t sure though). It was a very small one, much like an islet and you can literally cross it in just a few steps.

The first island, "Pajos"

Who says August can't be hot?

After enjoying the sight of the first island, we moved to the second one which was named…., oh blame me for not bringing a pen and paper. Anyway, the second island was one that featured trees and stones (Just like the ones we see in TV shows). The stones were beautifully carved to form some mini-caves. Moreover, that was, according to our tour guide, the one with the finest sands out of all the islands in Caramoan.

The second island

And time moved fast so we had to move to the third and last island. This one (I forgot the name again) boasted  its majestic background, which was another island with unique cabins in front of green hills.

Finally reaching the third island

Jeff while feeling the water and enjoying the view

This is the view that I am talking about

Feeling the warmth of the seawater

And time flew. It was almost 10 am so we had to go home because the last trip from Guijalo port back to Sabang port was at 11 am.

All-in-all we visited three equally beautiful islands, which were completely picturesque and left us in awe.

But as they say, nothing lasts forever and we had to bid Caramoan goodbye.

And then we sailed back to where we came from. Well what can I say, “Time is gold.” Goodbye Caramoan, ’till we meet again.

Goodbye Caraomoan, 'till we meet again

Ecstacy

And so it dimmed,

And so it dimmed,

The wasted dream,

The secret scheme.

The light was cold,

My skin was bold,

Let’s make it flow,

Your lonely glow.

Let’s keep it pouring,

The toxic brewing,

And feel oblivious,

You see it’s obvious.

Let’s move a bit,

We’re near the pit,

Just let it fall,

Your nasty call.

And so the night,

It goes just right,

Let’s make it last,

Let’s move it fast.

And water and heat,

They boil our meats,

Like burning holes,

Like sinful souls.

And soon it struck,

It came like luck,

The taste of peak,

It came so quick.

And now our breaths,

Are deep in depths,

Your face was weary,

Mine was eerie.

The night just came,

Just like a game,

Let’s walk away,

Forget the play.
